Sounds Like: Blitzen Trapper, Phosphorescent, Cave Singer
Why You Should Care: There is hardly a band around that Megafaun hasn’t helped, guested, or been part of recently. Gayngs, Grandma Sparrow, Sylvan Esso, Hiss Golden Messenger and the Shouting Matches all owe something to Megafaun
Six months into 2012, following the release of their fourth album, Megafaun decided to take a break from themselves. They’d been playing, recording and touring for six years, and couldn’t find the fun anymore.
Instead of taking the time to relax, the members invested in multiple side projects, including Sylvan Esso, the side project of bass player Nick Sanborn and Mountain Man’s Amelia Meath. Core band members, brothers Phil and Brad Cook and friend Joe Westerlund, contributed in various ways to Mount Moriah and the Rosebuds recent tours, as well as collaborating with former bandmate Justin Vernon.
All this means that Megafaun doesn’t really have time to be Megafaun much these days, so when you can see them, it’s a cause for celebration. Lucky for you, they’ll be playing in DC9 this Thursday.
