The Cars

Daily Listen: The Cars - "Drive"

It's 10 till midnight and the bar is thinning out. I sit alone. My lukewarm Bud-Light sweats into my hands, making them clammy yet moisterized. It's a weird sensation, but I've had 12 of these things so I don't really feel it.

All night the music has been some bastard love-child of techno and classical. It's been stabbing me in the ear repeatedly as some fool violaist shreds it Baroque style over a thumping cacophony of cowbells and gym whistles. But that's all about to change. The staff is taking over. They're ready to rock.

First comes a little Foreigner. Then the door swings open to the kitchen and I catch a glimpse of the cooks gathered in a circle, all wearing their sunglasses...at night. There are high fives and secret shots going around and suddenly my 1/4 of a can of backwash isn't providing me the company that I need. That's when I hear it.

"Who's gonna drive you home....tonight"

Oh yea. Now we're talking. Straight for the good stuff. I love this song. Hell, who doesn't. Metaphor, stacked upon metaphor upon metaphor....OK maybe that's too many metaphors. But at there's at least two in there that I can make out in my drunk as shit fatigued state. It's speaks to me. It makes me feel my humanity. My sadness. May aloneness.

And then she sits down. Maybe I'm not really alone. Wait. Oh yea. The lady just went to the bathroom. I remember her words well. "I'll be right back". Yea lady. you stayed true to your word. I appreciate that. I appreciate you.

All these thoughts and more run through my head as I stare across the table into her big brown eyes and mouth one word, and one word only.

"Romantical."

Daily Listen: The Cars - Heartbeat City

The Cars released their fifth studio album in 1984 as MTV well on its way to becoming the media juggernaut that it is today..or was. With videos like "You Might Think", "Magic" and "Drive", the band was at the high point of their career and had become icons for the MTV Generation. This, the title track for the album, was never officially released, instead finding its way onto a video compilation that the band put out that prominently featured lots and lots of boobs. Alien boobs. Suffice to say 12 year old me was pleased when he pushed play on the seemingly innocuous videotape. That is until 12 year old me's folks, who were not so much with the pleased, walked in the room.

So thanks Rick Okasek, Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, Benjamin Orr and David Robinsin! You showed me my first live alien boob...and got me grounded. SO WORTH IT!

Photos: The Cars @ The 9:30 Club - 5/24/11

The Cars hit the 9:30 Club Monday night, and we were there to sadly try and relive our youth check out this insanely influential band as they tore through songs both old and new. For the most part, the band did not disappoint. They hit all the right hits at all the right times, and amazingly, after all these years guitarist Elliot Easton can still shred with the best of them. The new songs fit nicely into the set but were often a reminder that not everything The Cars did was great. In between the hits on every album there were always songs that were, um, less than hits. But when The Cars are on in songs like "Magic", "You're All I've Got Tonight" and "Best Friends Girl" there aren't many bands in existence that can touch them.

If this is a victory lap for The Cars, it's a well deserved one and they will have gone out on a high note. If instead it's just the start of a new chapter, then I say bring it on. Who knows who they'll influence next.

Check out the band performing "Moving In Stereo" below, and then head on over to our photo gallery to see the complete set

The most awesome zombie ever?? (I kid, I kid)

Daily Listen: The Cars - Blue Tip

Well you can go ahead and file this in the "HOLY S@#@!!" column for the week. Not only do the surviving members of The Cars (bassist Benjamin Orr passed away in 2000) have a new album out, it's actually pretty damn good!! Blue Tip is the opening track on this new set of songs and lets you know what you're getting this time around right up front. Take a listen for you self though too decide if what this revived version of The Cars is doing is (uh oh it's) magic or not.
