Episode 249: Hang - Foxygen

The largest peaceful protest in American history took place this weekend, not just here in DC but all over the world. We're gonna talk about it. Yes...this is what we mean by the "and nothing but" part of our tagline.

Foxygen isn't just a band, it's a state of mind. On their fifth album Hang, the duo of Jonathan Rado and Sam France are letting their freak flags fly high - REAL HIGH - and the result is a powerful dose of psychedelic bombast, that's equal parts past and future, and 100% alright, alright, alllllright.

Guy Blakeslee @ The Crown [Baltimore, MD] - 1/19/15

Baltimore native Guy Blakeslee moved to LA years ago, but he still returns regularly to perform in his home city, and on Tuesday last week he played a solo set at The Crown. Blakeslee began his solo career in the early 2000s performing under the name Entrance, changing it to The Entrance Band in 2009 when he was joined by Paz Lenchantin on bass and Derek James on drums. In 2014 he released his first solo album in a decade (and the first under his own name), Ophelia Slowly, and just this month he released an album of instrumental pieces titled The Middle Sister

Mercury Rev @ Rock and Roll Hotel - 10/16/15

Buffalo, NY’s Mercury Rev has been on an extended hiatus from new material, having released their last album, Snowflake Midnight, in 2008, and has played live only infrequently (and mostly in Europe) since. Fans were delighted at the beginning of this month when the band finally re-emerged with a new album, The Light In You, followed by a US tour.  The new album finds the band’s trippy melodic sensibilities fully intact, the promised “psychedelic rock and blue-eyed soul” of album centerpiece “Are You Ready?” spanning the record’s 11 track, 44 minute runtime.  Their stop in DC at the Rock and Roll Hotel showed a rejuvenated band that, over 25 years into their career, is still going strong.
