Fuck Buttons - "The Red Wing"

SOUNDS LIKE: Portishead, Massive Attack

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: Noise bands can be either stunning or god-awful. Fuck Buttons does its best stay closer to the former.

Fuck Buttons, the Brit duo known for essential noise albums such as Tarot Sport and Street Horsing, are gearing up to release a new album this year after 4 years of silence (save for the Olympic recording they were commissioned to do, much to everyone’s shock). The first single of the album, “The Red Wing [edit]”, strays away from the aggressive noise they intended to record in the first place to experiment with trip-hop.

Unlike cuts from Tarot (see “Surf Solar”), the track focuses less on drone and more on keeping a steady hip-hop drum line that borders into house music (even switching from drum machine to real drums). The synths come in immediately blaring, not unlike the screetchy guitars of bands like Sleigh Bells (or that odd guitar solo added to the end of “Giorgio by Moroder” by Daft Punk). What is noticeable for the electronic duo is that, unlike in the past, the two are swerving away from the droning they’re known for and are focusing more on getting to the point immediately, with “The Red Wing” makes that blisteringly clear.
