Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris. Johnny Cash and June Carter. Michael Trent and Carry Ann Hearst. These are a few of folk and country-rock's best duos. And while Michael Trent and Carry Ann Hearst, known better as Shovels & Rope, might not yet be as iconic as their predecessors, the energetic, endearing pair are well on their way.
Trent and Hearst's first joint release, Shovels & Rope, came in 2008 following separate musical endeavors - Trent with indie pop band The Films and Hearst as a solo artist. Two years later, the title of that initial EP became the band's namesake as Shovels & Rope took their act on the road. Somewhere along the way, the duo got hitched, becoming a husband-and-wife force to be reckoned with. Shovels & Rope, with their raucous live show and southern charm, keep alive the spirit of old-fashioned, "do what you can with what you have" alt-country and folk.
This year, the couple are touring seemingly nonstop in support of their 2012 debut album, O' Be Joyful, with an upcoming headlining show at 9:30 Club on Wednesday, September 11. One-man-folk-band Shakey Graves will be kicking off the fun, folk-filled night. For your chance to win tickets to the show, please do one of the following:
