DAY 5: TED HAWKINS - SUFFER NO MORE

This came to me on the recommendation of a dear friend.  In her words, "As a little girl, I used to lie in bed on weekend mornings when my parents were listening to this.  It made me feel so safe and so full."  I know just what she means.  This is a blend of soul, gospel, country, and folk that's part joyful, part heart-wrenching.  It comes with a made-for-Hollywood back story of a Mississippi-born, Sam Cooke-inspired street performer who got critical acclaim but never popular success, dying months before the release of his first major-label record.

And if that doesn't interest you, I bet it has the only song you've ever heard that's all about an Afro pick.

Enjoy.
